Gay Marriage Creeps Ever Closer
In fact, Gay marriage is now officially knocking on NY’s door.
LATimes.com:
The Connecticut Supreme Court on Friday gave gay and lesbian couples the right to marry, ruling that civil unions relegate them to a “separate” and “inferior status” that falls short of full equality.
“We therefore agree with the plaintiffs that ‘maintaining a second-class citizen status for same-sex couples by excluding them from the institution of civil marriage’ ” violates the state’s constitutional guarantee of equal protection of the laws, the state high court said.
New York, one of the bluest states in the country, was at the forefront in the war on marriage inequality. The Mayor of New Paltz, NY, Jason West, performed hundreds of civil unions and had an online waiting list of thousands before being served with a cease and desist order from the state. Thusly, I am confused. I was under the impression that New Yorks anti-gay legislation was overturned in 2005. From USCHO.com in 2005:
“A New York State judge in Manhattan ruled yesterday that a state law that effectively denied gay couples the right to marry violated the state Constitution, a decision that raised the possibility that the city would begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples as soon as next month.
The ruling, by Justice Doris Ling-Cohan, was the first on the state level to side with proponents of gay marriage. In her 62-page decision, she wrote that the state’s Domestic Relations Law, which dates to 1909 and limits marriage to unions between opposite-sex couples, deprived gay couples of equal protection and due process rights under the state Constitution.
She likened the law to those that once barred interracial marriages and said that words currently used in defining legal marriages – husband and wife, groom and bride – “shall be construed to apply equally to either men or women.”"
So, why does New York refuse to allow gay marriages to be performed in state when Gov. Patterson has decided that the state will recognise all unions from all ststes regardless of sexuality? I don’t have an answer. I’m sure NY will be the next domino knocked down by HRC and GLADD. I mean, who still cares if Adam and Steve wanna go through the trials and tribulations of marriage now that were all on the brink of losing our retirement accounts? Really.
